A new Malaysian PC Game is in the works!

Before I tell you about our new game, please take a moment to appreciate the pun I cleverly put in the title. As you may already know, we work at Weyrdworks, hence the play on words, ‘in the works’.

Now that we’ve had a good chuckle, let me tell you a little bit about our game development studio, Weyrdworks, and our newest fetus - Weyrdlets!

Wing’s Introduction

Hello! I am Wing; Also known as Derpmeowmeow! I am the newest addition to this incredible Malaysian game development company, tasked with being their Social Media Specialist. The team here at Weyrdworks has been secretly working on something cool, but nobody from the office is talking about it (everyone is busy programming, designing, drawing, and animating). So, that’s where I come in. I think it’s about time we share some tea with you!

Weyrdworks - The Best Malaysian Game Development Company

Weyrdworks was founded in 2016 by two friends, Shawn Beck, and JT Yean. Our founders’ background studies were in Animation and Graphic Design, respectively.

Shawn has been passionate about making games since he was a tiny lad. His love for making games started when he was seven years old! Shawn created games with a passion, from making games using 2b pencils and notebooks to self-learning game engines and making games on them like RPG Maker, Game Maker, and Unity. He majored in 3D animation, which distracted him from making games for a few years, but then got back into it after his studies ended.

On the other hand, JT also studied animation (Shawn and JT were coursemates!) and then proceeded to further his studies in graphic design, excelling in anything and everything aesthetics. When JT started making games with Shawn, he knew nothing about game art, but it didn’t stop him from producing amazing work!

These game art were all done by JT. Petty impressive, right? Both my bosses have almost 0 legitimate background in game development! But that didn’t stop them from producing amazing, dopamine-inducing games!

Salad Days

In the beginning, Weyrdworks only consisted of our cofounders - two game developers against the world. Even though they were short on manpower, their games did not shy away from the international spotlight.

In 2014, Shawn and JT released their game called Velocibox, which garnered many players on PC and PlayStation alike. It even caught the attention of famous Youtubers like Markiplier and JackSepticEye!

Fast forwarding to today, Weyrdworks has made its name as an award-winning Malaysian game development studio that has worked on internal and external projects. We have released multiple top-notch mobile games like Super SteamPuff and WarPods. In the last two years, we launched another PC game, Unicorns on Unicycles, an early access of a new mobile game called Monster Nest, and we are now working on our latest wholesome game, Weyrdlets.

Timeline of our games

Let’s talk about our newest fetus!

The creation of our newest wholesome game Weyrdlets started in the middle of 2022 when our team of Malaysian game developers birthed the idea for this interactive and innovative game. ‘How do I pronounce the name of this game?’, you may ask. Don’t worry; I’ve got you covered. It’s pronounced as (Wi-yerd-lets), just like ‘weird-lets’.

Weyrdworks, as you now know how to pronounce it, is a renowned Malaysian game development studio for its collection of award-winning, eccentric games. Our quirky team has a penchant for tinkering with experimental interactive experiences and delighting players with unparalleled creativity. Up until now, most of our games have been flashy, colorful, and fun. The gameplays were a blend of funky, cute, and “you-must-kill-to-win”. However, everything changed when we embarked on the journey of creating Weyrdlets. The change of pace and design was because Shawn wanted to play to our team’s strength and build a game that could form a community around the game.

Inspiration with a twist

Weyrdlets’ inspiration came from the cozy world of Animal Crossing, where players find comfort in their virtual homes and the sweet memories of tending to and caring for Tamagotchi pets. Our dream was to incorporate the essence of these beloved worlds, designing a gaming experience like no other — a haven for players seeking relaxation, joy, and the delightful companionship of their virtual pets.

Weyrdlets’ pet adoption experience

What is so different?

Weyrdlets is a delightful desktop pet game that allows players to adopt their very own virtual companions. Players can choose to adopt their pet (Wagyu, Mochi, and Gyoza), name them, and then transport them to a virtual world. The game starts off with the pet spawned in its cozy little house on an island. You can interact with them in numerous ways. You can feed and play with them with the food and toys bought from our in-game store. You can also purchase decorations and furniture to beautify your pet’s home!

But that is not all! These adorable companions are not just for show. When you have to work or study, you can even bring your pet to the desktop, keeping you company while busy. We believe this game can be enjoyable for people of all ages, bridging gaps with fun and beautiful art.

The first feature that we are currently working on is the ability to decorate your Weyrdlets’ homes. We’re talking about multiple variations of customization options that will let your creativity run wild. Design a cozy little den or a playful paradise for your pet - the choice is yours!

Customizable home

But our unique selling point is a groundbreaking feature that defines the term ‘virtual pet’. We are developing a feature that allows you to bring your beloved Weyrdlet directly onto your desktop! You can have a virtual companion right there with you when you are working or studying. You can control what it does, interact with it, and bring it back to the island when and if you want to. It’s like having a lovable little assistant cheering you on, melting away stress, and providing you with only good vibes!

Bringing Wagyu to the desktop

These are only some of the primary features we’re crafting into the game right now, and it does not end here! Our passionate team continuously brainstorms, ideates, experiments, and builds upon the game’s foundation. We have plans for exciting updates, additional features, and expansions to keep this game fresh and engaging for years. Join me as I write more dev logs and reveal new updates about the game’s development!
