Ludum Dare Boss Battle ; Challenger 2

As we near the date of Ludum Dare: Boss Battle, let's introduce you to our second challenger, Jia Hui. She is our in-house DJ and Animator Extraordinaire. This is going to be her third game jam. Let's see what she says about joining Ludum Dare this year.

Jia Hui is our animator extraordinaire, and aspiring shader artist! (she's also a self-declared resident meme queen and office DJ).

Can you tell me about your previous game jam experience?

So I've participated in 2 game jams so far. In the first one I was in, I teamed up with people I didn't know. It was eye-opening because I did not know how game jams worked or my team members. But apparently, it wasn't their first rodeo, so I had good guidance and even made a few friends by the end.

Game jams also reminded me of those secondary school club camps where you would be packed with activities and very little sleep, but the payoff of submitting the game at the submission date felt oh-so-rewarding.

The second game jam I joined was with a bunch of friends. I remember the first night of discussion was just filled with the silliest, dumbest ideas and gags, and I literally laughed until my stomach hurt. Staying up late and seeing everyone tired and grumpy (I was grumpy myself) was part of the inevitable process haha. I remember not being very satisfied with the game we made when we submitted it. Still, a few days ago, my friends and I decided to revisit it, and to my surprise, it was actually fun and good (but definitely very rough on the edges)! I'm glad I now have a new-found appreciation for it. The game and the team effort deserve it.

Why are you joining Ludum Dare this year?

It looks fun and challenging! It's something to keep me on my toes this year. This is my third game jam, but I'm still nervous and excited!

Do you have any words for game devs who're considering joining a game jam?

Don't worry about not doing well! The game doesn't have to be perfect. And when you feel like not finishing the game, HONESTLY, just bite down and finish it. The future you will thank you.

Joining as a team is always fun, but if you're up for the challenge and have big plans, going individually is also an experience. Whatever it is the goal that you enter game jam with, don't forget to have fun and enjoy the process. And remember, it's a place to learn from others and gain insight, so keep an open mind, embrace the challenge and your mistakes, and learn, learn, learn!

Also, don't forget to hydrate. So important. It really helps with clearing up the mind.
