Ludum Dare Boss Battle ; THE BOSS

Ludum Dare is in two days, so it's finally time to do a reveal about THE BOSS. Not only is he THE BOSS that we have to beat in this challenge, but he is THE BOSS of our company. Why did he even challenge his Weyrdworkers? Is he really that confident in his skills? Let's dive deeper and find out.

Shawn is our studio director here in Weyrdworks, besides also being a field engineer for Unity. He also organizes game jams and developer meet-ups within the country as the current Chapter Coordinator for IGDA Malaysia!

How many years of experience do you have in game jams?

My first jam was in 2012 when we made a "one button" multiplayer game called SteamPuff. That would make it 10 years. There aren't usually awards in the jams I joined (only the ones I'm asked to host), but I was ranked number 8 out of about 800 entries in the 2014 Indies vs PewDiePie game jam. That was immortalized in a Pewds video.

What is a favorite game you made during a game jam, and why?

Hmm. It's hard to pick a favorite. Maybe, Manual Overload because it's short and gets the most reaction out of people. I have a special place in my heart for games like SHIFT and Vanguard Rush. Those are my more action-packed titles which is a genre I love. I'm also quite fond of Stack Droid Saves The Party which ranked #3 out of 2000+ entries for best graphics.

Why did you challenge your colleagues in this Ludum Dare? Do you think they will emerge victorious? >:D

I hope they do! As a team lead, my main goal is to help my team grow. This challenge is meant to nudge them out of their comfort zone and force them to push the limits of what they can achieve. Will they emerge victorious? Join the stream to find out!

Why do you like joining game jams?

I love game jams. It is an opportunity for me to create something new and personal within a short time. I just love creating things. Making games is my way to creatively express myself as an artist, which is why I typically jam solo so that I have complete creative control of what I want to put out to the world.

Do you have any words for game devs considering joining a game jam?

A lot of beginners shy away from game jams because they don't have confidence in their skills. A game jam is THE place to build confidence. Don't be afraid to fail. It's part of the process. Above all else, remember to have fun making your game.

Give us a few words you'd like to say to your challengers this weekend.

I'm so proud that you guys are taking on the challenge. SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT.

DAMN, the boss is STACKED. So based on all the features of our Ludum Dare participants, WHO will emerge on top? Follow us, and we will keep you updated, so DO hold your breath!
